Y’all. Let me tell you about the beginning of summer here in Korea.
If you live (or have lived) in America in the summer, periodically, you’ve experienced major thunderstorms, heavy rain showers and maybe a few Tornados depending on what state you live(d) in. However, in Korea and most of Southeast Asia, the beginning of summer is monsoon season also known as “rainy season.”
Monsoon seasons usually starts mid-June until the end of July. However this year it starts today lol (7/2). You may be thinking, “What’s the big fuss? So it rains/thunders now and then.”
It’s gon’ rain all month! All day, every day. Look at all those thunderstorms!!
Now you may be thinking, “It’s just rain, it’s harmless!” O’contaire my friend. Southeast Asian air is extremely polluted and according to Insider Monkey, Korea ranks 8th among the 8 Countries That Produce The Most Acid Rain. Not only is acid rain bad for the environment. It can cause problems with your health and hair. In Korea, it’s rare to see people walking in the rain sans umbrella unless they could give a s***.
The silver lining – In 2015, Pantone created Project Monsoon, a creative way to “cheer people up” during monsoon season. Pantone’s design team painted murals on various streets in 서울시 (Seoul) with paint that’s only visible when it rains. It’s cool, but it doesn’t hide the fact that IT’S GON’ RAIN ALL MONTH! Learn more about the project here.
